Having burst onto the NRLW scene last year, Sharks half Georgia Hannaway's star continues to rise with selection in the Queensland Maroons squad for the State of Origin opener on Thursday, May 1.

Hannaway is in line to make her Maroons debut against New South Wales at Suncorp Stadium next month after being named in a 20-woman squad on Monday.

Once a rugby sevens prodigy who represented Australia as an 18-year-old, Hannaway joined Cronulla from Norths Devils last season and quickly established herself as one of the most promising playmakers in the competition.

After making her NRLW debut off the bench against the Cowboys in Round 1, Hannaway ended the year as Cronulla's starting five-eighth. She scored a scintillating try as the Sharks thundered home to almost steal the grand final against the Roosters and earned the club's NRLW Rookie of the Year award.

With a penchant for exciting eyes-up footy, Hannaway has tallied four try assists, six line-break assists and two line-breaks in seven appearances for the Sharks.

The Brisbane-born dynamo is one of six uncapped players in the Maroons squad alongside Jasmine Peters (Cowboys), Hayley Maddick (Broncos), Jada Ferguson (Broncos), Tavarna Papalii (Roosters) and Rory Owen (Eels).

While Ali Brigginshaw and Tarryn Aiken have formed a strong halves partnership for Queensland, Hannaway's versatility puts her in calculations for a spot in the 17.

Brigginshaw has played lock in the past and could revert to the position, potentially opening the door for Hannaway to earn a start in her favoured role.

The Tahnee Norris-coached Maroons hold the women's Origin shield after winning the final two games of the inaugural three-match series last season.
