In similar scenes to the 2024 Jersey Flegg grand final, Cronulla again fell agonisingly short against Canterbury in a dramatic 18-16 defeat at Sharks Stadium on Saturday.
Just like last year's decider, the Sharks had the final shot at the Bulldogs but couldn't capitalise on attacking field position in going down by two points.
Match: Sharks v Bulldogs
Round 4 -
home Team
Sharks
6th Position
away Team
Bulldogs
7th Position
Venue: Sharks Stadium, Sydney
Beginning the first half, both sides showed poor discipline which didn't allow either team to get over early. However, after some solid attack, Cronulla placed the Bulldogs under pressure and second-rower Lajuan Vito smashed over in the 11th minute. Halfback Taj Ford successfully converted, giving the Sharks a 6-0 lead.
It wasn’t long before the Bulldogs hit back with a try in the corner to Jope Rauqe. Five-eighth Bronson Reuben converted, levelling the score at 6-6.
Capitalising on their strong match so far, front-rower Stefano Sele barged his way under the black dot to secure the Sharks’ second try in the 20th minute, Ford able to convert again, giving Cronulla back their six-point lead.
It wasn’t long until the Sharks almost struck again, however they were unable to complete.
With plenty of possession and penalties given to them, the Bulldogs marched their way over in the corner off the back of a scrum, with Rauqe getting a double in the 33rd minute and Reuben converting once again to lock the scores.
Just after the break, Cronulla struck in the 47th minute with five eighth Ashton Simmonds getting the four points, although Ford was unable to convert, the score remaining 16-12 in favour of the home side.
Throughout the second half, both sides were playing a tough match, neither allowing the other any room or chance of scoring.
The Sharks had many calls go their way, however concrete Bulldogs defence, as well as some poor mistakes, made it extremely difficult to get across.
Perseverance in defence gave Canterbury prime opportunity to score, and in the final 10 minutes, hooker Patrick Young secured the Bulldogs' third try, placing them in front 18-16 with five minutes remaining in a tough grand final rematch.
However, the score was final at 18-16 and the Bulldogs came out on top, proving their determination in this season once again.
Now with 2-2 record, the Sharks are back in action on Saturday against the Raiders at Belconnen Oval.
