For any youngster eager to improve ahead of the Cronulla Junior Rugby League season, Sharks Have Heart's Ungah Academy, featuring coaching from Paul Gallen, is an unmissable opportunity.
A skills-based development program led by accredited coaches for boys and girls aged 6-12, the Ungah Academy – which takes its name from the Dharawal word for shark – is the ideal launchpad for a successful and fun year on the field.
Proudly supported by Sharks community partner Quest Apartment Hotels, Ungah Academy sessions will be run every Tuesday night (5.30-7pm) for five weeks, from February 25 to March 25, at Woolooware High School (pending weather).
Gallen, one of the greatest Sharks players of all time with a record 348 NRL games for the club, will make regular appearances in helping to equip participants with necessary skills and techniques leading into the JRL season.
"I'm excited to join the accredited coaches at the Ungah Academy and pass on what I've learnt throughout my career," said Shark #339 Gallen, who retired in 2019.
"While having fun should always be the focus of junior rugby league, children also need proper coaching from an early age to ensure they're confident and competent. It goes a long way towards enjoyment and safety.
"I'd encourage all keen young footballers to come down to the Ungah Academy and sharpen their skills, make some new friends and have a ball while doing so."
Registration for the program is $229, with the price including a Sharks Ungah Academy training T-shirt, a Sharks boot bag and a three-game Sharks membership.
The skills taught at the Ungah Academy will help the Cronulla Junior Rugby League continue to flourish from the bottom up. Last year, there were more than 6100 registered players (up 8.6%) across 424 teams and 68 competitions, with female participation up 19.5% and male participation up 3.9%.
