Powerhouse prop Tuku Hau Tapuha will remain at the Sharks until at least the end of 2026 after inking a one-year contract extension on Friday.

The 196cm, 114kg forward tallied 10 first-grade matches for eight wins in 2024, providing explosive impact off the interchange with his customary line-bending carries.

Having also played a key role in the Newtown Jets' NSW Cup premiership this year, Hau Tapuha – who turned 23 this month – is eager to continue growing at the Cronulla club.

"I'm grateful the Sharks have instilled that trust in me," he said.

"I enjoy the playing group and the staff from the bottom up. They make it an easy joint to come into and I'm grateful to spend another year here.

"I'd like to thank the coaches, thank my parents and, most of all, thank the man above. You can achieve everything through him and he's the centre of my life."

Sharks General Manager Football Darren Mooney said the club is pleased to have retained Hau Tapuha, who joins the likes of Braydon Trindall, Briton Nikora, Liam Ison, Cameron McInnes and Teig Wilton in re-signing over the off-season.

"Tuku is a valued member of our squad with vast potential," Mooney said.

"We saw glimpses of his ability this year. He's only just turned 23 and is yet to come into his prime as a prop, so we're excited to see the levels he can reach."

Hau Tapuha, who played three games for the Roosters before rekindling his connection with coach Craig Fitzgibbon at the Sharks in early 2023, said his main takeaway from the season just gone was that "you never stop learning, especially about your position".

The Auckland-born front-rower now hopes to have a bigger presence at NRL level.

"I want to play more consistently in that top side," he said.

"The big goal for me is getting a few more minutes. I think I can really showcase what I bring to the team."

Even with a limited role, Hau Tapuha produced 16 tackle breaks in the NRL this year – including seven in a damaging 14-minute stint against the Titans – and crashed over for a crucial try in the Round 10 victory over the Storm.

The Māori All Stars representative also impressed in 15 reserve-grade appearances for the Jets, starting in their thrilling Grand Final victory over the Bears and taking home the Brian 'Chicka' Moore Shield as the best and fairest player throughout the season.
