Spirit of 2016 driving Sharks in NRLW decider

Impassioned speeches from Michael Ennis and Paul Gallen about what it takes to win a Grand Final will ring in the ears of the NRLW Sharks as they seek to etch their names in greatness tomorrow.

Ennis, Gallen and fellow 2016 premiership winners Chad Townsend and Jack Bird addressed the squad at Sharks HQ on Saturday before their final training session at Accor Stadium ahead of Sunday's epic showdown with the Roosters.

The players sat spellbound as Ennis and Gallen imparted inspirational words of wisdom, highlighting the similarities in the journeys of the '16 team that won Cronulla's maiden NRL title and Tony Herman's history-making NRLW side.

Sharks NRL coach Craig Fitzgibbon, General Manager Football Darren Mooney, CEO Dino Mezzatesta and staff members were also on hand to support the squad.

Like Gallen's troops eight years ago, the 2024 women's team enjoyed a winning streak before their form wavered as the finals approached. They both turned it around emphatically in the playoffs, with the girls now 70 minutes away from bringing a second premiership – their first in the NRLW – to the Sutherland Shire.

Coach Herman referenced the impact of Cronulla's inaugural title-winning side as his players prepare for their defining moment in the club's second NRLW season.

With the odds-defying spirit of 2016 within them, the Sharks women are ready to seize their moment and write themselves permanently into club folklore.

"Talking to the guys from the 2016 team, the buzz around the Shire... if we could win it, it’d be amazing," Herman said at yesterday's Grand Final press conference.

The game will be broadcast live at 3.55pm tomorrow on 9, 9Now, Foxtel and Kayo.

If you're not headed to the game, the Sharks at Kareela live site will be showing the action on the big screens – feel the passion and get behind the girls!
