Penitani honoured twice at Dally M Awards

Sharks skipper Tiana Penitani was celebrated for a sublime season at tonight's Dally M Awards ceremony in Sydney, taking out the NRLW Captain of the Year and Centre of the Year gongs.

As she prepares to lead her team into Sunday's Grand Final against the Roosters, Penitani was recognised for a campaign in which she's scored a team-high seven tries and inspired the Sharks to seven wins in just their second NRLW campaign.

Showcasing her array of talents, the rising media star was also on hand to conduct interviews on the TV broadcast for Fox Sports in between collecting her trophies.

"I'm really humbled to receive this," Penitani said on stage after being announced as the NRLW Captain of the Year, paying tribute to fellow nominees Ali Brigginshaw (Broncos) and Isabelle Kelly (Roosters).

"I feel really fortunate to be considered in the same echelon as people like them."

While they didn't win, Penitani's Sharks teammates Annessa Biddle and Emma Tonegato were nominated for Centre of the Year and Five-Eighth of the Year respectively, while Tony Herman was up for NRLW Coach of the Year.

NRL halfback Nicho Hynes was the only other Shark to come away with an award, receiving the prestigious Ken Stephen Medal on account of his community work.

The club produced two NRL Team of the Year nominees in Jesse Ramien (Centre of the Year) and Blayke Brailey (Hooker of the Year), however they unfortunately walked away empty-handed. As did Kayal Iro, who was pipped for Rookie of the Year honours by the Dolphins' Jack Bostock.

Storm playmaker Jahrome Hughes was crowned the NRL Dally M medallist, with Roosters second-rower Olivia Kernick claiming the NRLW equivalent.
