Jets, Flegg Sharks continue finals pushes at Leichhardt

For the second week running, the Sharks' Jersey Flegg team will play before the Newtown Jets as they continue their finals campaigns at Leichhardt Oval on Sunday afternoon.

It's do or die once more for Cronulla's under-21 Flegg side, who will face the Panthers after accounting for the Knights 22-6 in week one of the playoffs.

The Jets – the Sharks' feeder club – can book a place in the Knock-On Effect NSW Cup grand final by defeating minor premiers North Sydney. If beaten, they'll get a second chance at qualifying for the decider against the Raiders or Panthers.

The Flegg Sharks weren't quite at their peak to kick off the finals but did enough to end Newcastle's season, running in four tries to one in a scrappy contest.

But having now strung together eight consecutive wins, the Andrew Dallalana-coached outfit will fancy their chances of continuing the streak against a Panthers side defeated 32-6 by the Bulldogs last time out.

Classy halfback Riley Pollard, a member of the full-time Sharks NRL training squad, scored the first try and kicked three goals against the Knights.

Penrith have won both games over Cronulla this year, however the Sharks have improved markedly since their last meeting in Round 16.

Dallalana has named an unchanged team for the 3pm fixture.

Newtown, meanwhile, put paid to Canberra 38-16 to earn a shot against the Bears, who enjoyed a rest during the opening week of the finals having finished first – one competiton point above the Jets. The ledger sits at 1-1 between the teams in 2024, Newtown having triumphed 18-8 when they clashed in Round 23.

A host of Sharks-contracted players are again set to turn out for the Jets, including Liam Ison, Chris Vea'ila, Tom Rodwell, Niwhai Puru, Jayden Berrell, Tuku Hau Tapuha and Billy Burns. Kick-off is at 5pm.
