A fleet-footed fullback recruited from the Panthers on an NRL development deal, promising youngster Liam Ison has arrived at the Sharks keen to learn and capitalise on new opportunities.
The speedster, who turns 19 next month, has settled into his fresh surroundings after starting pre-season training with the first group in early November.
Ison was a standout in Penrith's junior representative ranks, helping the club win the under-21s Jersey Flegg premiership in 2022. He received his first taste of senior football via the NSW Cup in June, running for 138 metres as a winger on debut.
With most of the senior Sharks players back on deck and preparations for 2024 in full swing, the highly rated Ison is soaking up as much knowledge as possible.
"It's unreal. The boys have welcomed me in. I'm getting to know everyone now," Ison said after an intense fitness session at PointsBet Stadium on Wednesday.
"With Fitzy (coach Craig Fitzgibbon) back we're ramping up now, so it's been good.
"I want to learn. Obviously the dream is to play NRL, but that may come in the future. If I'm in (NSW) Cup or Flegg, (the goal is) just to play the best footy I can."
Currently living with his parents in Penrith, Ison doesn't mind driving to the Sutherland Shire on training days but plans to eventually become a local.
He believes switching to the Sharks was the right call for his progression.
"From an outside point looking in, it seemed like there was a good culture here, so it was a place I wanted to come and grow not only as a player but as a person," he said, with the likes of Will Kennedy and Kade Dykes showing him the ropes.
"Dykesy's had a year off, so he's pretty eager to get back on there. I'm looking up to him a bit. Obviously Will's on top of the game at the moment," Ison added.
"Watching Dale (Finucane) come back, his preparation is unreal ... coming to every session, getting a good sleep, just preparing every day and giving it 100 per cent."
Asked how he'd describe his playing style, Ison suggested his game is based on effort. His highlights show impressive acceleration and an ability to shrug off defenders.
"I've got a lot to work on - that's why I'm here - (including) catch-pass, but I always give 100 per cent and I'm a bit nippy," the St Dominic's alumnus said.
Away from the field, Ison enjoys getting out for a round of golf, teaming up with his mates on the video game Fortnite and relaxing with his family.
