History will be made on Sunday when the Sharks play their first game in the NRLW competition.
In their season opening game in their first year of participation in the elite level NRL women’s competition, the Sharks host another of the NRLW newcomers in the Canberra Raiders in a match kicking off at 1.50pm. The game will be the second of three to be played at PointsBet Stadium on Sunday, with an NRL match between the Sharks and Sea Eagles to follow and a Jersey Flegg game before the NRLW as the curtain-raiser.
Sharks coach Tony Herman has named a team to play the Raiders with a mixture of experience and youth, with the side to be captained by NSW Origin and Jillaroos outside back Tiana Penitani.
Others with representative experience in the Sharks squad include Emma Tonegato, Quincy Dodd, Vanessa Foliaki and Brooke Anderson, while exciting youngsters Jada Taylor, Andie Robinson and Annessa Biddle get their opportunity to showcase their abilities at the NRLW level.
Kiana Takairangi has also represented New Zealand, Ellie Johnson was a member of the NSW Country team and the NSW Sky Blues Origin extended squad earlier this year, while Tayla Preston played for the NSW City Women’s outfit in 2023.
The Sharks come into the game on the back of a solid trial hit out where they managed to keep the Wests Tigers scoreless while crossing for four tries of their own.
The Sharks v Raiders game, which will be immediately preceded by a performance from recording star Samantha Jade, is scheduled for a 1.50pm kick off at PointsBet Stadium on Sunday.
