At just nine years old, Goran Nikolosk was involved in a life-changing car accident.
After spending two weeks in a coma, he was forced to relearn the basic skills of walking, talking and eating. Amidst the challenges, it was the hospital volunteers who supported him through each day and assisted with his recovery, leaving a lasting impact on Goran that has inspired him to give back to the community.
Now, an integral member of the Shark Crew, Goran has contributed over 250 volunteer hours to the Shark’s and the Cronulla Caringbah Junior Rugby League Club just this year alone, leading to his recognition as the Round 16 volunteer of the week.
“It felt good [to be recognised], because I love what I do,” Nikolosk said. “I’d help out anyone.”
“When I got up [from the coma], volunteers were helping me get through the day. I couldn't walk at first and I needed them, and now I want to give back as a volunteer.”
As a lifelong Shark’s fan, Goran began volunteering as the now-retired MC Hammerhead mascot in 2018, before transitioning into a variety of different roles this year.
“I’ve been a Shark’s fan for as long as I can remember,” he said.
“I started as a volunteer doing the mascotting, then I got into the coaching side of things.
“I’m doing the Cronulla Caringbah Sharks, helping out with SG Ball, and helping the girls out, so I’m all over the place.”
Despite attending every home game to assist with different volunteer roles, Cronulla’s clash against the Bulldogs last Sunday, saw a unique twist to Goran’s game-day involvement, as he was offered the opportunity to watch the game and sound the Shark Alarm from the Aramex Lifeguard Tower.
“I go to every home game and sometimes even the away games too, but last week was special,” Goran said.
“It’s the best view in the house, besides being on the field.”
Across Australia, it is estimated that over 5-million people volunteer and to show appreciation for their tremendous work for the many organisations and sporting groups in need of their support, Sharks community and sporting partners will nominate a ‘Local Hero’ as Volunteer of the Round.
The community contributions of each Volunteer of the Round will continue to be recognised throughout the season, with their deeds and those of their club or organisation promoted through the Sharks website and Sharks Have Heart social media channels.
