The Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership Sharks have joined in the celebrations surrounding the NRL’s Multicultural Round, taking part in a Māori Poi workshop last Saturday.

In celebration of the NRL’s multicultural round, following a training session last Saturday, the Sharks Harvey Norman Women’s team took part in a Māori Poi Workshop.

The team was joined by sisters Te Aparangi Thompson and Riana Cooper, who proudly shared their Māori culture and knowledge of the history of Poi - a rhythmic dance originating from the Māori people of Aotearoa.

The workshop consisted of a poi-making component where the players were taught how to create their own poi using a wool tether, foam, and plastic bags, with the squad then learning how to perform a cultural dance using the poi they had made.

With several members of the Sharks HNWP team identifying as Māori, including Kiana Takaraingi and All Star Representatives Zali Fay and Brooke Anderson, this workshop offered players a unique opportunity to learn and appreciate the heritage and traditions of their fellow teammates, promoting cultural understanding within the team.
