Sharks meet Dogs in final trial tune up

A host of backline stars get their first opportunity to impress in 2023, with competition for places in the 17-man team for round one going on the line when the Sharks tackle the Bulldogs in their final pre-season trial match on Sunday.

Will Kennedy, Ronaldo Mulitalo, Sione Katoa, Jesse Ramien and Siosifa Talakai have been named to play in this weekend’s trial after missing the Knights match last Friday, while Nicho Hynes and Matt Moylan rekindle a halves partnership which proved to be a successful one in 2022.

In the forwards coach Craig Fitzgibbon will start the trial match with returning regulars Toby Rudolf, Braden Hamlin Uele and Dale Finucane in the middle of the field, however in what shapes as a formidable bench rotation, Cam McInnes, Oregon Kaufusi, Jack Williams and Thomas Hazelton will all receive game time at some point in the contest.

The trial match should also provide a preview as to how Fitzgibbon plans to use Wade Graham in 2023. Teig Wilton will start the game in the second row, with Graham named on the interchange bench.

Similar to the Sharks, the Bulldogs will run out with a team predicted to be close to their round one 17, Kangaroo squad members Josh Addo Carr and Matt Burton to play after missing their club’s first up trial last weekend.

New recruits Reed Mahoney and Villiame Kikau have also been included in their 26-man squad.

Under the format of the Pre-Season Challenge, where teams are awarded points for a win, then bonuses for tries, line breaks and off-loads, following week one victories the Sharks and Bulldogs are both in line to collect the $100,000 prize on offer.

The Sharks v Bulldogs trial is scheduled for a 5pm kick-off at Belmore Sports Ground on Sunday as the second game of a double-header, with the Raiders to play the Wests Tigers at the venue, starting at 2.55pm.
