The slogan goes – Wheelchair Rugby League, a game for all – and that was never more evident than at the Come and Try event held last Saturday afternoon.

Sharks NRL players Ronaldo Mulitalo, Sione Katoa and Siosifa Talakai mixed with athletes of different genders, ages, and abilities, for a fun afternoon at the Anzac Oval Leisure Centre in Engadine.

The Sharks trio worked up a sweat going through a few of the drills and skills of Wheelchair Rugby League, alongside Liam Luff from the Australian Skyring Wheelaroos.

All who took part, including Mulitalo, Katoa and Talakai, quicky developed an appreciation for a sport which is inclusive to all and not just for people with disabilities, with Wheelchair Rugby League a variation of the running game, allowing athletes with disabilities to compete with and against people without disability.

The recent World Cup in the UK, run in conjunction with the Men’s and Women’s competitions, showcased Wheelchair Rugby League, with Luff, a local Sutherland Shire resident and passionate fan of the Sharks, a member of the Wheelaroos who is now using his experience to give back to the sport he loves by coaching the Cronulla Sharks NRL Wheelchair side. Sharks home games are played in Menai.

Opportunities remain for players, coaches, referees, trainers, and volunteers to join a Wheelchair Rugby League team or club in 2023.
