For the first time in three years, the next generation of rugby league stars from across 17 NRL clubs came together to learn about life as a professional rugby league player at the NRL's Rookie Camp in Penrith last week.
The young Sharks contingent of Jesse Colquhoun, Sam Stonestreet, Josh Finau, Siteni Taukamo and Niwhai Puru, formed a part of the 80 strong players that attended the two-day course.
Former NRL players including ex-Shark Jono Wright, Alan Tongue, David Solomona, Clinton Toopi, Ian Roberts and Jason King delivered presentations, videos and workshops designed to educate the rookies on off-field decision-making, behaviour and performance.
Some of the topics covered included respectful relationships, inclusivity and diversity, financial literacy, drugs, alcohol and the perils of social media.
Sharks Education and Wellbeing Coordinator Jeff Robson said the NRL’s Rookie Camp forms an essential part of a young players career as they enter into a full-time NRL environment and was impressed with the way the boys embraced the opportunity.
“I was really proud of the way the boys represented themselves and the club.” said Robson
“It was great to get them back into a face-to-face environment after a three-year break, and for them to have this opportunity to be taught valuable skills by former NRL players who they can relate to, learn from and really embrace the knowledge and lessons that are being shared.”
“You can see our boys come back united as they enter the next chapter of their young careers.”
