The Jersey Flegg Sharks have started their 2018 season with a convincing 38-14 victory over the Sydney Roosters.
In a match played at Southern Cross Group Stadium the Sharks would forge to a 32-0 lead midway through the second half, before taking their foot off the throttle somewhat then going on with the job to ground out an impressive win.
Other than the leaking of late points Sharks coach Dave Howlett would have been extremely satisfied with the first-up performance of the under-20 Sharks.
Hard-working lock Monty Raper opened the Sharks account with a try in the 13th minute and when Chris Tupou followed up with the first of his two four-pointers shortly after, the home team were well on top.
Youngster Bronson Xerri managed to cross for a try, as did his centre partner Ronaldo Mulitalo, with back rower Josh Carr, who had spent the summer training with the Sharks NRL squad, also get across the line in a good reward for his efforts during the match.
Middle forward James Roumanos rounded out the Sharks try scorers, while Braden Trindall kicked five goals.
The Flegg Sharks will look to build on their strong start when they play the St George Illawarra Dragons in a round two match next Saturday at Kogarah Jubilee Oval. Kick off is at 1.30pm.
